Welcome to Häradssätter!

Cottage rentals on a Swedish farm

Enjoy farmlife on Sweden’s East Coast

Enjoy farmlife

Häradssätter Gård is located right where the forests of Småland meet Östergötland – nestled in a landscape of magnificent oak hills and a peaceful, secluded lake. This is a place to breathe and simply be.

Whether you are joining us for a family holiday filled with adventure, or seeking the quiet inspiration of nature to find peace and focus, our farm offers an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

Swimming by the lake

The lake is just a short walk from the cottages, offering wonderful opportunities for swimming, boating, or paddling. The shoreline by our private pier is shallow and child-friendly, while the floating dock further out invites you to dive into the deep blue. If you get hungry, there is a barbecue area with seating and pre-stacked firewood waiting for you.

Hang with the animals

At the farm, you’ll truly live close to nature and our animals. Our horses often come right up to the fence beside the cottage to say hello, and curious peacocks may wander past your door in the early morning. You’re welcome to relax with our friendly goats in the meadow for as long as you like, and if you happen to lose your way to the lake, our dogs Ellie and Bonnie will be more than happy to lead you there.

The stillness

Enjoy your morning coffee to the soft sound of hooves, row out onto the lake at sunset, and experience complete seclusion. When the horses have left the pasture for the season, deer quietly emerge at the edge of the forest. Here, stillness is more than a word — it’s an experience.

Swap the office for the farm

Here, you’ll find true peace and quiet for work. During the low season, our cottages offer the perfect setting for focused productivity. With fast, reliable Wi-Fi and nature’s calm just outside your window, it’s easy to settle into deep concentration. We can arrange everything you need to create a complete and comfortable workspace.

Fish in two lakes

As our guest, you have access to our boats for fishing in our lake, home to perch, pike, and zander. If you’re looking to take your fishing to the next level, you can rent our motorboat on the nearby large lake Yxningen, well known for excellent fishing, including Arctic char and salmon. For the more adventurous, the Baltic Sea archipelago is just ten minutes away.

All year round

Häradssätter has many faces. The farm changes with the seasons. The farm is just as beautiful in winter as it is in summer, and autumn brings its own quiet character. Whether you visit for Christmas, New Year, the school holidays, Easter or Midsummer, you’re welcome to stay with us at any time of year.

It exceeded all our expectations

The cottage is even cozier in real life than in the photos. We immediately felt at home! Everything was clean, and the surroundings are simply dreamy. No traffic noise — just pure peace and quiet. We went on many walks and hikes in nature, and the two dogs, Bonnie and Ellie, always joined us. A wonderful stay that we highly recommend!

We love this wonderful little place on earth!

The calm, the scent of nature and forest, and the cosy cottage — we felt completely at ease. Watching the animals (cats, dogs, horses, chickens, a turkey, and peacocks) brought us great joy. The lake is not far away and is perfect for a refreshing swim or a boat trip.

Surrounding the farm

Seasonal foraging

During summer and autumn, the forests surrounding the farm become a well-stocked pantry. You can fill your basket with blueberries, lingonberries and — believe it or not — cloudberries. The woods also offer a rich variety of mushrooms, and we’re happy to show you where to find chanterelles, porcini, trumpet mushrooms and parasol mushrooms, depending on the season. If you move quietly and with a bit of luck, you may even spot a moose stepping out between the trees.

Life on Häradssätter farm

It all began in the 18th century

Häradssätter’s history dates back to the 18th century, but our own journey here began in the summer of 2017, when we first visited the farm. We fell in love with the place, left city life behind, and today we can hardly believe how fortunate we are to care for what previous generations have built over centuries.

Our ambition is to run a small-scale farm with a focus on self-sufficiency. Here, you’ll find everything we value: livestock, cultivation, hunting, fishing, and life close to nature.

The farm is home year-round to the two of us, along with chickens, peacocks, cats, dogs, goats, and countless wild animals that we glimpse at the edge of the forest or trace by their tracks in the snow. In summer, the farm becomes much livelier, as horses—and sometimes cattle—arrive to graze and help keep the landscape open.

Meet our team

A wonderful bunch

Many hands help keep Häradssätter running. Here are some of the characters you may meet during your stay:

The farm dog

Ellie
Ellie is a mix of Labrador and Border Collie. She was meant to guard the animals, but couldn’t be less interested in that job. Instead, Ellie is the dog who will happily guide you to the lake and make sure you find your way back again. For her guiding services, she accepts payment in playtime with sticks, balls, water — or the shoes you may have left outside the door.

The farm dog

Bonnie
Bonnie is a working farm dog who keeps our animals safe from foxes and birds of prey. She can be a little reserved and may bark at newcomers, but if you ignore her, she will eventually come over and ask for affection — and plenty of it. Bonnie sometimes joins walks to the lake, but always heads home on her own to keep watch over the farm.

The farm cat

Bob
“Is Bob real?” one of our younger guests asked after seeing his photo on Instagram. Yes, he is — but you’ll have to take our word for it, as he doesn’t show himself very often. Bob is busy catching mice and keeping the chickens on their toes. In summer, we hardly see him at all, and in winter, we almost have to force him to go outside.

The goats

Luna, Kajsa, Lotta & Nutta
We have twelve goats — all of them friendly, and almost all happy to be petted. During summer and autumn, they stay in a fenced area in the pastures, while the rest of the year they live in and around the barn. They do have a habit of escaping and roaming freely around the farm, which isn’t too much of a problem — we’ve simply learned to fence in the trees and bushes we want to keep.

The farm cat

Rodrigo
This is Häradssätter’s resident cat. Highly skilled, he catches mice, voles and — to our slight dismay — even small snakes, squirrels and birds (!). Originally a city cat, he has had to learn to leave the chickens and peacocks alone. It wasn’t easy, but by now he knows they’re part of the family. Rodrigo is completely fearless and will happily come over to say hello.

The peacocks

Paultry & the gang
We have several peacocks on the farm. They are curious, beautiful, and slightly mischievous towards the chickens — even though they’ve saved more than a few of them from the hawk. They often stop by the cottages and like to show off on the terrace railing. Offer them bread or sausage, and they’ll make sure to visit you every morning.

The chickens

Heidi & co
We have around forty chickens of all kinds on the farm. We keep them for companionship and eggs. This is Heidi — she’s seven years old and stopped laying eggs long ago. As our oldest hen, she now enjoys retirement and is free to roam the farm.

The horses

Connemara ponies
In our 18-hectare pasture, several of Holmtebo Farm’s beautiful Connemara ponies graze between May and October. They are friendly, curious, and wonderfully clever. Sneaking treats past them to the goats is no easy task! In the evenings, as you sit on the terrace, you may spot them and hear the sound of their hooves as they gallop across the field — pure magic.
